Remember when Dustin Hoffman angrily shouted those famous lines in the 1969 movie, “Midnight Cowboy”? He was blocked by moving cars while trying to cross a busy intersection in Manhattan.
I want to shout those same words and some more colorful ones many times as I take my daily hikes. It isn’t street traffic that blocks my way, but people on sidewalks with smartphones glued to ears and eyes. They ramble blindly along, mindlessly bumping people attempting to get past them.
When you’re talking or texting on sidewalks, the easiest way to avoid the trouble is to find an out-of-the-way spot a few steps away to do it. If you insist on walking while talking and staring at the little screen, be aware of what’s ahead. It could be a mother with a baby, a senior in a wheelchair or little old me on my walker attempting to get by without being knocked down on the unforgiving cement.
