In my daily wanderings, I often pass this busy exit ramp of the Hollywood Freeway in downtown Los Angeles. Because a red traffic light regularly stops drivers, the site is frequently occupied by one or more enterprising wanderers. Their hand-made signs, ragged clothing and in-the-window vocal pleading inform the stopped drivers of the need for financial help.
The other day on one of my rest stops, I sat with my camera and observed the actions. Within 25 minutes I saw one supposedly unfortunate beggar take in at least $50 from sympathetic delayed motorists. Hey IRS, all this old guy needs is ragged clothing and a pleading sign. Then I’ll earn some tax-free income! Seriously, if you want to help the homeless effectively, give your donation to a legit agency, including the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
